RUSSIA TIES, KIEV'S EU BID

Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Kiev, Ukraine, in Russian, 13 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Friday, Aug 13, 2004

PARTENIT, Crimea - US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld sees no
conflict between Ukraine's rapprochement with Russia and the course
towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration that Kiev has declared.

Asked by journalists, Rumsfeld told a news conference after a meeting with
Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhen Marchuk in Partenit (Crimea): "Ukraine
is a sovereign state, it takes decisions which it deems are in its own
interests, and this is (normal - Interfax-Ukraine) for any country in the
world."

He said that he supports "strong corporate relations between the Ukrainian
and US military personnel". "We also maintain relations with Russia. Just as
Ukraine maintains them with Russia. And we see no conflict here at all," the
US defence minister said.

Rumsfeld expressed his personal opinion that "Ukraine is down on a very
constructive and advanced path towards Europe, NATO and transatlantic
cooperation". "We value such efforts. And we don't think that this is a kind
of zero-sum game," he said.

[Kuchma has amended Ukraine's military doctrine, omitting the aim of joining
NATO and the EU. The move was welcome by Russia and condemned by
the Ukrainian opposition as a major policy U-turn. Kuchma denied the
allegations, saying it had nothing to do with appeasing Russia, merely a
realistic re-evaluation of Ukraine's policy.] (END) (ARTUIS)

2. U.S. DEFENCE SECRETARY RUMSFELD IN UKRAINE-
OUTLINES PRIORITIES FOR IRAQ

Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Kiev, in Russian, 13 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Friday, Aug 13, 2004

PARTENIT, Crimea - US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has
agreed with the opinion of his Ukrainian counterpart, Yevhen Marchuk,
that the term of coalition forces staying in Iraq depends on the situation
in this country.

The number of forces maintaining security in Iraq is increasing and has
reached 160,000 people, of whom 110,000 are the forces trained by
the Iraqis themselves to maintain security in this country, Rumsfeld told
a news conference in Partenit (Crimea) on Friday [13 August].

"We expect that 50,000 Iraqi servicemen will have been trained by the
end of the year and will begin performing their duties. As a result, the
Iraqi force will be the largest one (in the coalition troops -
Interfax-Ukraine), and will maintain stability and security in Iraq. We
expect that while the Iraqi force will be taking on more and more duties
the need for coalition forces will decrease," Rumsfeld said.

He also outlined "two compulsory components" for security in Iraq. "The
first is the need for helping Iraqi security forces. Some countries,
including some NATO members, have already agreed to voluntarily provide
this assistance to Iraq. The second is support for the presence of the UN
and its activities. This is also connected with the election that are to
take place in Iraq at the beginning of next year," Rumsfeld said. (END)

TV 5 Kanal, Kiev, Ukraine, in Ukrainian, 13 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Friday, Aug 13, 2004

KIEV - [Presenter] [Ukrainian] President [Leonid] Kuchma has
confirmed that the country's course towards European and Euro-
Atlantic integration and its position on strategic partnership with the
USA remain unchanged. He promised this to [visiting] US Defence
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in Crimea. Rumsfeld met with Ukrainian
Defence Minister [Yevhen] Marchuk.

[Passage omitted: Rumsfeld outlines "two compulsory components"
for security in Iraq.] The two ministers agreed that the length of the
Ukrainian peacekeepers' deployment in Iraq depended on the situation
in that country. [Marchuk] To a significant extend - I have already
spoken about this - [this] will depend on how quickly the Iraqi security
forces are able to take the situation in their country under control.(END)

4. UKRAINE TO MAINTAIN CURRENT IRAQ MILITARY FORCE

The Associated Press, Partenit, Ukraine, Friday, August 13, 2004

PARTENIT, Ukraine - Ukraine's defense minister said Friday his country
will maintain it's sizable military force in Iraq for the foreseeable
future, contrary to his earlier suggestion that the force might be reduced
or withdrawn.

Defense Minister Eugene Marchuk said the force would stay close to its
current level of 1,600 soldiers. His comments came in a news conference
with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld in this resort town on the
coast of the Black Sea.

Ukraine's troops constitute the fourth largest contingent of allied soldiers
aiding the large U.S. force in reconstruction and security efforts in Iraq.
They are primarily involved in training Iraqi security forces. Rumsfeld,
after meeting with Marchuk and Ukraine President Leonid Kuchma,
praised the former Soviet republic for its support in Iraq.

Kuchma's office issued a statement after the meeting saying Ukraine
"remains on the path of Euro-Atlantic integration," despite his recent
move to back away from assertions that Ukraine is striving for full
membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European
Union.

Both NATO and the EU had said previously there was no chance for
early membership for Ukraine in the two organizations. From Ukraine,
Rumsfeld was heading for Russia. (END) (ARTUIS)

5. UKRAINE'S SHARP SHOOTER OLENA KOSTEVYCH WINS
OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL IN WOMEN'S 10M AIR PISTOL

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, China, Sunday, August 15, 2004

ATHENS - Ukraine's sharp shooter Olena Kostevych claimed the Olympic
women's 10m air pistol gold medal on Sunday after beating Jasna Sekaric of
Serbia and Montenegro in a shoot-off.

Kostevych and Sekaric both finished the 10-shot final with a total of 483.3
points. The 19-year-old Ukrainian girl then scored 10.2 points against her
rival's 9.4 points to scoop the top honor. "It's the important moment in my
life," said Kostevych, who is competing in her first Olympics.

Kostevych, who had started the final in eighth place, gradually moved into
the lead on the penultimate shot but was then caught by Sekaric on the final
shot, forcing the one-shot shoot-off. "I didn't know my rank in the
competition, I just tried my best," said Kostevych.

Sekaric, who topped the qualification round with 397 points, showed a
fluctuant form in the final and once slumped to eighth. The fourth-time
Olympian steadily clawed her way back but failed in the shoot-off.

The dramatic final also witnessed two other shoot-offs that decided the
bronze-medalist and the fifth-place. Bulgarian Maria Grozdeva (10.4) edged
China's Ren Jie (9.7) to take the bronze medal. Russian Natalia Paderina
(10.0) pipped Germany's Munkhbayar Dorjsuren (9.3) to finish fifth.

Defending Olympic champion Tao Luna, who has been struggling with dismal
form since this year, suffered an early exit in the qualification round with
366 points. The 30-year-old equaled the Olympic qualification record of 390
points en route to taking the title in Sydney in 2000. (END)

6. "'MURDER BID' ON UKRAINE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE"

By Helen Fawkes, BBC correspondent in Kiev
BBC NEWS, UK, Sunday, August 15, 2004

KIEV - Ukraine's main opposition leader and presidential candidate
has said he has survived an assassination attempt. Viktor Yushchenko
was travelling in the south of the country during an election tour when,
it is claimed, a lorry tried to force his vehicle off the road.

Car crashes are common in the former Soviet republic - around
1,000 people die on its roads every year. In recent years, a number
of politicians have been killed or injured in traffic accidents.

Mr Yushchenko claims what happened to him was no accident.
His team has said that the day before the incident they had a tip-
off that someone would try to kill the presidential candidate in a
traffic accident.

SUSPICIOUS ACCIDENTS
Mr Yushchenko said the car in which he was travelling on Thursday
tried to overtake a lorry three times, but on each occasion the
lorry swerved towards his vehicle. The former prime minister had
been travelling in Kherson in southern Ukraine as part of a campaign
tour of the country.

Mr Yushchenko is currently leading the opinion polls as the favoured
candidate to win the presidential election in October.

The roads in Ukraine are generally in a poor condition, but some
accidents involving powerful people have aroused suspicions.
In 1999, a dissident and prominent politician, Vyacheslav Chornovil,
was killed when the same type of lorry pulled out in front of his
car and a couple of years ago, another leading opposition figure,
Yulia Tymoshenko, was injured in a head-on collision. (END)

7. AN ATTEMPT TO PUSH YUSHCHENKO OFF THE ROAD WAS
MADE ON THE ROAD FROM KHERSON TO NOVOOLEKSIYIVKA

Our Ukraine website, Kyiv, Ukraine, Friday, August 13, 2004

KYIV - An attempt to push Yushchenko off the road was made on the road
from Kherson to Novooleksiyivka incident took place in the evening of 12
August while a column of cars that accompany Victor Yushchenko in the tour
was going from Kherson to Novooleksiyivka. About 15 kilometers away from
Novooleksiyivka the front car, driven by Victor Yushchenko, attempted to
pass a KamAZ truck with a trailer.

The maneuver was being performed in accordance with all the traffic
regulations, nevertheless, when Yushchenko's automobile came alongside the
truck, the KamAZ suddenly made an abrupt move to the left and forced the
Audi to the side of the road. After that, the automobilists used their
lights and sound signals and once again attempted to overtake the truck. The
driver of the KamAZ, however, performed the same maneuver again. After
the KamAZ created a dangerous situation on the road for the third time, one
of the accompanying vehicles did manage to overtake it and force the truck
off the road across the opposite lane.

The reason for resorting to such decisive measures was the latest events
surrounding Victor Yushchenko: the involvement of militia in provocations,
illegal surveillance after the people's deputy, blatant inactivity by the
"law-enforcement" organs, and their inability to ensure the safety of
Yushchenko's life; therefore, members of the security team made a decision
to block the dangerous vehicle, which is in line with the security rules.
The driver of the truck hit his chin on the steering wheel as a result of
the sudden stop.

Having stopped the KamAZ, members of the motorcade called the local
representatives of the State Traffic Inspectorate; the driver, however,
refused to show documents, provide his name or explain his actions.

After the incident, the column, headed by Victor Yushchenko, continued on
its way while the truck driver was left with the law-enforcers. Members of
Yushchenko's security team and people's deputies attempted to find out the
results of the investigation and only in the morning were able to find out
that the driver was let go without any explanations, without testing for
alcohol or drugs.

Earlier, members of Victor Yushchenko's security team were warned about
the threat to the life of the presidential candidate specifically on the
road. That was why Yushchenko's representatives insisted that the law-
enforcement authorities carefully investigate the incident; a decision not
to report on the incident until learning all the details was made.

Nevertheless, it became known later that, despite the fast freeing of the
driver, law-enforcement representatives had "worked" with him all night
long; hence, there are reasons to suspect that this incident would be used
as a provocation against Yushchenko. (www.razom.org.ua/set/en)

8. UKRAINIAN INTER TV INTERVIEWS DRIVER IN PRESIDENTIAL
CANDIDATE VIKTOR YUSHCHENKO ROAD INCIDENT

Inter TV, Kiev, Ukraine, in Ukrainian, 14 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service,UK, in English, Sat. Aug 14, 2004

KIEV - The Ukrainian Inter TV channel has broadcast parts of an interview
with the lorry driver who was allegedly beaten by members of opposition
presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko's campaign team on a road in
Kherson Region, southern Ukraine, on 12 August. The driver, Leonid Averin,
gives his account of what happened, and says that he will not be voting for
Yushchenko.

Inter TV is associated with presidential administration chief Viktor
Medvedchuk. The following is the text of the report by Ukrainian Inter TV
on 14 August:

[Presenter] Now to the incident in the village of Novotroyitske in Kherson
Region in which the Leonid Averin, a lorry driver at the Salyut farm, was
injured. The leader of the Our Ukraine bloc, Viktor Yushchenko, has
commented on it. I remind viewers that the police say that it was people in
the candidate's entourage who stopped the lorry, dragged Averin out of his
cabin and beat him up.
Viktor Yushchenko said that the behaviour of his supporters was appropriate,
as the lorry was not giving way and an MP, said the leader of Our Ukraine,
was put in danger. It must be said that Yushchenko himself said that he was
not scared and, as the person being protected, immediately left the scene.
But Leonid Averin it seems just cannot recover from the shock.
[Correspondent] Leonid Ivanovych Averin has been a driver for more than
30 years. He's lived his whole life in the countryside and said he has no
connection with politics. Everything beyond the boundaries of his home
village is abroad. And so Averin did not understand initially what sort of
people he had met on the road and why they had started to beat him.
[Averin, in Ukrainian] So this one said `"Let's see your papers!" and then
this other one came up, and, you know, it was that sort of situation, I
opened the door and the first one grabbed my leg and then another grabbed
me, this really big guy [indistinct] blow, and the next thing I'm on the
ground, my temples hurts, the back of my head, I don't understand what it
is. I'm either feeling like I'm going to throw up, I just sat down in the
evening and tried to eat something but it wouldn't go down.
[Correspondent] All his fellow-villagers sympathize with Leonid and are
afraid. For a long time the would not reveal his address, and then asked us
not to name any others. They understand that it is not going to be easy for
him to get out of this situation on his own, as the simple villager's nerves
are going. It is difficult to converse with Averin, he's always bursting
into tears.
[Averin, in Ukrainian] I'm afraid because this was an important man.
[indistinct] I don't know, maybe they're some sort of outsiders, maybe
they're important. And then it was Yushchenko himself. I didn't know what.
[indistinct account of police arrival] They're trying to make out I'm some
sort of saboteur.
[Correspondent] Averin's family, like the overwhelming majority of rural
people, are waiting for the harvest in the hope that it will feed them
through the coming winter. The events of 12 August have destroyed their
plans. The Averins don't even have money for medicine at the moment.
[Averin, in Ukrainian] The boss gave me 50 hryvnyas [about 8 dollars]. I
borrowed 50 from my mother. And for the rest, we'll see. Perhaps my wife
will do something.
[Correspondent] But Leonid has already drawn his first conclusion from
that evening. He will definitely vote in the elections.
[Averin, in Ukrainian] Yes, I'll vote.
[Correspondent] Who will you vote for?
[Averin, in Ukrainian] I won't say, but definitely not for him [Yushchenko].
I won't say, but I will vote.
[Presenter] The head of the traffic police department of the Ukrainian
Interior Ministry, Henadiy Heorhiyenko, has said the testimony of everyone
involved in the incident confirms that the lorry driver had not broken the
highway code, and that those responsible for inflicting the blows will
answer under the criminal code.

sporting what looks like a bruised lip] (END) (ARTUIS)

9. UKRAINIAN TV CHANNEL 5 OFF AIR IN UZHHOROD
[More suspicious reasons given to shut down Channel 5]

UNIAN news agency, Kiev, Ukraine, in Ukrainian, 14 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Aug 14, 2004

KIEV - The Kram cable-TV operator has stopped broadcasting 5 Kanal
in the residential district of Uzhhorod where 30,000 people out of the
town's population of 120,000 live. The Institute of Mass Information's web
site reports that Kram's director, Oleksandr Medvetskyy, said that the
stoppage is due to unresolved business issues between Kram and 5 Kanal.

"We really have stopped broadcasting 5 Kanal since some business issues
were not resolved and we won't restart until they are completely resolved,"
he said. Medvetskyy refused to specify what was not resolved, however.

Kram provides cable-TV services in the biggest residential district of
Uzhhorod, Peremoha-2, where more than 30,000 people live.

On 3 August, cable-TV operator Falstap stopped broadcasting 5 Kanal in
Dnipropetrovsk for technical reasons. On 6 August, more than 50,000
opposition supporters picketed the Dnipropetrovsk regional administration
building protesting the disappearance of 5 Kanal from the city's cable
networks. Falstap was forced to resume broadcasting 5 Kanal on 7 August.

The press service of the Our Ukraine bloc also reported that 5 Kanal was
earlier taken off the air in Dniprodzerzhynsky and Novomoskovsk. In June,
the Donbasstelemerezha and Ukrtelemerezha cable operators stopped
broadcasting 5 Kanal in cable networks in Donetsk and the Donetsk Region
cities of Artemivsk, Selidove, Dymytrove and Yenakiyeve. (END)(ARTUIS)

10. UKRAINE PRESIDENT'S AIDE REBUKES GERMAN LEADER
SCHRODER OVER DANUBE CANAL STATEMENT

UNIAN news agency, Kiev, in Ukrainian, 13 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Friday, Aug 13, 2004

KIEV - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's statement that an
international assessment of the construction of the Danube-Black Sea
canal [by Ukraine] is advisable is due to Schroeder's lacking information.
The deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential administration and head of
its main analytical directorate, Vasyl Baziv, said this today.

Baziv was holding a regular news conference at the presidential
administration. "I would like to assume that German Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder is not very well informed," Baziv said.

Schroeder criticized Ukraine's building a navigation canal in the Danube
delta in Bucharest yesterday [12 August], [radio] Deutsche Welle reported.
[Passage omitted: details of Schroeder's statement]

The Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences opposes the project. The
academy believes that the canal may destroy the unique Danube biosphere
reserve, which was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. [The
European Union asked Ukraine earlier to stop building the canal until the
environmental impact could be assessed.] (END) (ARTUIS)

the opening of the Olympic Games. But this time he is not only a fan but
also a participant. He led the column of the Ukrainian sports delegation as
head of the National Olympic Committee [during the opening ceremony].

Today Yanukovych continued his work, this time as prime minister. At a

12. RUSSIAN ORTHODOX LEADER SNUBS POPE JOHN PAUL II

By Steve Gutterman, AP, Moscow, Russia, August 16, 2004

MOSCOW (AP) - The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasized
Friday that Pope John Paul II is not welcome in Russia, reiterating that an
icon the pontiff once hoped to return personally in a conciliatory gesture
is a copy of a revered 16th-century work.

Patriarch Alexy II told President Vladimir Putin that the icon - known as
the Mother of God of Kazan - will be turned over to the Russian Orthodox
Church at the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin later this month,
the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

But Alexy noted that the icon, now at the Vatican, previously was
determined to be `"one of many copies'' of the original. "For that reason
there is no need for the pope himself to bring it,'' ITAR-Tass quoted him
as saying.

John Paul had once hoped to return the icon himself and become the first
Roman Catholic pontiff to visit Russia, but sour relations with the Russian
Orthodox Church have prevented such a trip.

The aging pope's desire for a historic visit to Russia is part of his
efforts to promote greater Christian unity a millennium after Christianity
split into eastern and western branches. But Russian Orthodox leaders
strongly oppose a visit, accusing the Catholic church of seeking converts
in Russia and other traditionally Orthodox lands.

The icon, which first appeared in the city of Kazan in 1579, is revered by
Russian believers for its purported ability to work miracles, including the
rout of Polish invaders from Russia in the early 17th century. It was taken
to the West after the 1917 Russian Revolution and disappeared.

The Russian Orthodox Church said last year the icon obtained by the
Vatican in the 1970s was a copy and could "under no circumstances be
considered a reason'' for a visit by John Paul.

Orthodox leaders did agree for papal representatives to bring the icon to
Russia on Aug. 28, but Alexy's statement underlined the persistent
animosity between his church and the Vatican.

"There is nothing new in negotiations with the Roman Catholic Church,
except that on the Day of the Assumption, August 28th, the icon of the
Mother of God of Kazan, which was stored in the Vatican, will be
returned,'' ITAR-Tass quoted Alexy as telling Putin.

But he added, "It is one of many copies, not the original miracle-working
image that disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century.''

Alexy noted a commission that included representatives of the Vatican, the
Orthodox church and the Russian Culture Ministry had opened the metal
plating on the icon at the Vatican and determined it was an 18th-century
copy, the report said. (END) (ARTUIS)

FOOTNOTES: The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch

13. RUSSIAN PIPELINE MONOPOLY TRANSNEFT WANTS TO
BECOME A UKRAINIAN MONOPOLY AS WELL
Russia's Pipeline Monopoly Wants to Control Ukraine's Pipeline System

MosNews, Moscow, Russia, Friday, August 13, 2004

MOSCOW - Russia's state-owned oil pipeline monopoly Transneft wants
to act as a single pipeline operator for all crude supplies to Ukraine as
well as for crude transit via Ukraine. This information was told to Prime-
Tass economic news agency by a company source. The source said that
Transneft has already submitted an official proposal to Ukraine's state oil
pipeline operator Ukrtransneft.

Transneft wants to sign a 15-year agreement, which would provide for
centralized payments for transit as well as Transneft's distribution of
crude shipments via Ukraine's pipeline system. The agreement may be
signed in October, before the governments of Russia and Ukraine sign
an agreement on oil transit.

Starting this year Transneft has been the only operator supplying Russian
and Kazakh oil to Ukrtransneft. A source close to Ukrtransneft told
Prime-Tass that "there is nothing revolutionary" in Russian monopoly's
proposal, since Ukraine's pipeline system is a continuation of Russia's.
Besides, Transneft has always been in charge of scheduling deliveries of
Russian and Kazakh oil to Ukraine. (END) (ARTUIS)

14. "UKRAINE TV STAR SEEKS AFRICAN ROOTS"
Olga Betko from the BBC World Service writes about travelling to Nigeria
with Ukraine's famous television presenter Myroslav Kuvaldin in search of
his long-lost father and to find out more about his African heritage.

By Olga Betko, BBC World Service
BBC NEWS, World, Africa, UK, Thur, August 6, 2004

With his dark skin and his huge mane of dreadlocks, Myroslav Kuvaldin is
often seen as a foreigner in his motherland, Ukraine.

"I've been asked many times where I learnt Ukrainian. My favourite answer
is: 'Do you know how harshly I was beaten to learn it?'" But jokes apart,
I asked him what was the hardest aspect of being a "foreigner"? Was he
really beaten, bullied or hated?

"Absolutely not! I feel very comfortable in this country, and in my body...
Of course, I heard people calling me: 'Black bottom' - but so what? That's
true after all."

"Being different, you can perceive it as your disadvantage and suffer all
your life, or you can take it as a God's gift, and turn yourself into a
hero. I have chosen this second way - to embrace the duality in my life,
and became a poet, a musician and a TV personality."

'CLOSED CITY'
But he has not seen his father since he was four years old and says:
"Something is missing. I know only half of myself". Myroslav's father,
a Nigerian student, came to study in the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was anxious to promote its friendly
"internationalist" image, and free higher education was offered to students
from developing countries. Myroslav's father was one of those who benefited
and he met Myroslav's mother when they studied medicine together.

Myroslav was born in one of the so-called "closed cities", Dnieprodzershynsk
in eastern Ukraine, a centre for the military industry. Foreigners were not
allowed anywhere near the city, and even Myroslav's father could not go
there to visit him.

FATHER'S NAME
In 1980, Myroslav's father graduated from a Soviet medical institute and
flew back to his homeland. Twenty four years later, Myroslav wanted to
meet his father and discover Nigeria for himself.

But he had almost no clues where to find him and could not even be sure
that he was still alive. Myroslav cheered up when he received an archive
document from the medical institute where his father graduated.

It was an autobiography in his father's own handwriting, and for the first
time in his life Myroslav found out how to correctly spell his father's
name.

When he arrived in Lagos, he was amused to find out that he looked
different there, too. "For the first time in my life I was called a 'white
guy'." But he met many people in Lagos who were touched by the story
of this "white guy" who came all the way to trace his roots in Africa. A
whole army of enthusiastic helpers joined the search for his father.

TIME DIFFERENCE
After dozens of phone calls and introductions, Myroslav met a woman
by the name of Jolomi, and when she started to read the autobiography
... she suddenly recognised the name of his grandmother.

"Wowonu Dorti... yes yes yes - that's my auntie," she said. In no time at
all, Myroslav found himself immersed into the names and faces of his
newly-found cousins, aunts and uncles, along with their spouses and
off-spring, who rushed to "welcome home the white boy from Ukraine".

Just one person was still missing... but where was he? Myroslav was
stunned to find out that some three years ago his father went to work in
Fiji - on the other side of the world from both Nigeria and Ukraine.

He realised that he would not be able to see him this time, and the next
best thing he could hope for was to talk to him over the phone. The time
difference between Nigeria and Fiji is 12 hours but at this point neither
Myroslav, nor the family could wait any longer.

'WORLD CITIZEN'
"Hello, Dad," Myroslav said on his mobile phone. "I search you and I find
you," he continued, struggling with his English. "But you are in a different
place."

"It was a very messy conversation," Myroslav later wrote in his diary. "I
tried to explain myself in my poor English, and he in his forgotten Russian.
"At first he sounded confused, and it was obvious that he didn't quite
understand what was going on.

"I understood that he remembered and loved me when he called me by
my childhood name Myra. That was the main thing I wanted to know.
"But still, so many questions remain. I am sure he'll have a lot to tell me
when I finally see him face-to-face. Just when and where?... That is the
question."

Our stay in Nigeria was coming to an end, and I asked him whether he
felt at home in Africa. "People see me as a foreigner here as well... And,
like in Ukraine, I have two choices here: on one hand, I can feel 'Every-
where a stranger', but on the other hand I can feel 'Everywhere at home'
- a citizen of the world.

"I belong to neither the world of the whites, nor the blacks, but I can
understand both of these worlds... I think I am privileged in this respect
because this duality brings me more choice in life." (END)(ARTUIS)

15. SVITANOK TROUPE OF FOOT-STOMPING UKRAINIAN
COSSACKS FROM KYIV BRING THE HOUSE DOWN IN THE UK

By Kevin Donald, The Independent, United Kingdom; Aug 14, 2004

ALNWICK, Northumberland - A TROUPE of Ukrainian Cossack dancers
literally brought the house down with a foot-stomping performance.

Svitanok, from Kiev, was due to stage an outdoor exhibition in Alnwick,
Northumberland. Because of heavy rain it switched to an upstairs concert
room, but the owner of a wool shop downstairs noticed the building was
shaking.

Then to Dawn McMullen's horror, the ceiling caved in, showering her stock
with dust, plaster and debris. She said: "I got a huge shock, but luckily
there were no customers standing beneath." (END) (ARTUIS)

16. ARCHPASTORAL LETTER OF THE COUNCIL OF BISHOPS OF
THE UOC OF THE USA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 13TH
ANNIVERSARY OF UKRAINE'S INDEPENDENCE, AUGUST 24, 2004

Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC of the USA)
South Bound Brook, NJ, Monday, August 16, 2004

"Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom, a light has shown." (Isaiah 9:1)

Annually, for the past twelve years, we in America joined with our brethren
in Ukraine in joyfully commemorating and witnessing to the realization of
our prayers and aspirations -Ukraine's liberation and independence. For
those who rightfully focus on the spiritual reality of that which occurred
thirteen years ago, the event of August 1991, was clearly a good gift from
God. It was the answer to fervent prayers uttered and noble deeds
accomplished over centuries; prayers and deeds often sealed in blood,
shed out of love, for the nation and her people.

For this reason Ukraine's anniversary, be it the thirteenth, which we
observe this year, or any other, should be proclaimed, both by those who
are called to govern and by those who are governed, with joy and thanks-
giving. May they re-consecrate and recommit themselves to the Source of
all wisdom, serve Him with utmost fidelity and be responsible stewards of
the nation which has been bequeathed to them as a sacred trust.

On this auspicious and joyful occasion, we remind ourselves and those who
now govern and those who will govern in the future, that Ukraine was not
founded as a secular state, but, by the will of Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
sanctified by an apostolic presence, that of Andrew the First-called and
nurtured by the deeds of countless holy men whose lives and actions
reflected the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

On this particular anniversary, many in Ukraine, find themselves enmeshed in
the web and emotion of pre-election machinations. We are reminded of the
lofty concepts of righteousness, justice and dedicated service to humanity,
proclaimed in Holy Scripture, obligations which are incumbent upon all its
citizenry and not just a select few. Centuries ago, the Divine Teacher from
Nazareth reminded us of our responsibility to render to the One, Eternal
God that which pertains to Him and to secular government that which
pertains to it.

It is our most sincere prayer that this wise counsel given by the
Only-begotten Son of God, our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, will
guide all the citizens of Ukraine - entrusted with spiritual and secular
stewardship - so that this and future generations might be faithful
custodians of the light given them, walk as children of that light and, as
Saint Paul reminds us, clothe themselves in "heartfelt mercy, kindness,
humility, meekness and patience." (Col. 3:12)

Embracing this good gift of freedom with awe and thanksgiving with you our
spiritual children here in America and with those in Ukraine, we beseech the
Father of lights and every perfect gift, the Son of righteousness and the
Spirit of truth to descend upon us, embrace us, guiding and perfecting our
every deed.

13TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE OF UKRAINE
Almighty God, You gave us the land of Ukraine for our heritage; We ask
you today on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of independence of
Ukraine to prove us mindful of this great blessing. Bless our ancestral
homeland and these United States with honorable works, sound learning,
and good manners.

Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance.
Defend liberty which is an expression of your Divine Will. In this time of
freedom of Ukraine, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and grant us the
grace to continue to trust in You and Your mercy as we did in the days of
trouble. We ask this for we know that You are a gracious and loving
God in whom we are blessed through the Father and the Son and the
Holy Spirit, always now and ever and forever. AMEN

17. "WOMAN TELLS HOW SHE FOUND LOST SIBLINGS"
Igram's father fled from Ukraine as the Bolsheviks were taking
over in 1941 and German settlers were being persecuted.

By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk, Bismarck Tribune
Bismark, North Dakota, Saturday, July 24, 2004

Valerie Ingram grew up with a photo on the wall of siblings she had never
met. She could put names to the faces of her half-brother and half-sister,
but no one in the family knew if they were even alive.

In 1941, Ingram's father, Michael Renner, fled the Ukraine as the Bolsheviks
were taking over and Germans were being persecuted. Renner had suffered
because of his German roots ever since he saw his father tortured and killed
when he was 10 years old.

When Renner fled the Ukraine, he left a wife and two children, hoping they
would be able to join him in Germany. That hope never turned into reality.
The family was split, with the lives of the family members taking two very
different paths.

Renner remarried in Germany and started a family. Soon they moved to
Solen [North Dakota], where Ingram was born, and then to Spokane,
Wash. Back in the Ukraine, Renner's first wife, Lyuba, and children Adolf
and Emma lived a hard life, ostracized because they were German. The
children grew up believing their father had died in the war.

No one was willing to help the German family, and the mother was forbidden
even to scrounge for leftover grain in a harvested field. The family faced
starvation and the children were put into foster care at one point rather
than starve to death.

In 1990, when Renner thought he might die soon after a fall that injured his
head, his children asked if they could search for their half-siblings in the
Ukraine. He angrily forbade his children from searching until he had died.
Three days later he called all of them together, telling them not to bring
their spouses or children.

Renner explained that the Soviet government had worked by the creed
"death to the cradle." Since his father had been executed, he would have
been executed as well had his mother not doctored his birth certificate and
sent him to live with relatives. Renner still feared the former Soviet
government would track him down and persecute his family. He told his
children they would have his full blessing to search for their brother and
sister after he died.

After Renner's death in 1995, Ingram and her siblings began their search.
She joined the Germans from Russia Heritage Society and began piecing
together her family tree. For seven years, Ingram compared family trees and
searched immigration documents, but could find neither a record of the town
they supposedly lived in nor records of the brother and sister being alive.

In 2003, Ingram decided to visit the Ukraine on a group tour. "I couldn't
go all the way to Ukraine and not look in these villages to see if my
brother and sister were still there," she said.

Valentina Fromm, a woman involved with the tour, began looking for Ingram's
siblings in towns where they might have lived. Finally, Fromm located a
phone book for Kramatorsk, a town not found on maps, and found Ingram's
half brother listed. Fromm called, and after confirming the names of Adolf's
relatives and comparing pictures, Ingram had found her siblings.

The families on both sides of the Atlantic were overwhelmed with excitement
at having located their relatives, but Ingram's oldest brother feared it
might be a scam and needed proof. He asked Ingram to have the people who
might be their half siblings spit in a bottle when she went to the Ukraine
so they could do DNA testing. However, the resemblance of Adolf to their
father when they received pictures was so strong that all doubts vanished.

When Ingram and some of her siblings were united with their brother and
sister in the Ukraine, it was six days of feasting, heart-to-heart talks
through a translator and interviews with local media. Adolf had the same
mannerisms of his father -- his smile, the tilt of his head, the way he
spread his hands wide when he talked. Ingram and her siblings taught him to
say "Okie dokie" just like their father had said.

The local museum kept asking to meet with Ingram and her group until Emma's
daughter, Sveta, put a stop to the persistent requests. "She said, 'No more
museum stuff, no more concerts, no more expeditions. This is my family and I
want to get to know them,'" Ingram said.

When it came time for Ingram and her group to leave, everyone said tearful
good-byes and her relatives told her about a Ukrainian custom that when a
family member leaves, no work is done until they hear the person arrived at
their destination safely.

When Ingram arrived home she received a frantic phone call from her half
sister. They had discovered Adolf's phone had been tapped the entire time
the family was visiting and feared for their safety.

Since the visit, Ingram's half sister, Emma, and her daughter, Sveta, have
started the process to emigrate to the United States. However, they have run
into problems and it will be three to five years before Emma can emigrate
and eight to 10 years before Sveta can emigrate. "With a few hundred
prayers, we will have them here," Ingram said. "Miracles do happen and he
have hope."

Ingram is telling her story, "Lost in Russia," at the Germans from Russia
Heritage Society's 34th annual convention at the Ramkota Hotel Best Western
in Bismarck. She will present her story and slide show at 9 a.m. today and
1:15 p.m. Saturday. The convention runs through Sunday. (END)

FOOTNOTE: The title of Ingram's story should be "Lost in Ukraine," not
Lost in Russia" it seems to this editor. Her family, since the early
1920's, lived Soviet Ukraine, not in Russia. They have been living in
independent Ukraine since 1991. The country of Russia and the territory
that comprised the Soviet Union were not one and the same. This is a very
moving, interesting, historical story about the personal journey of people
who lived in Ukraine, not in Russia. (Editor)
