Kyiv - DLA Piper together with Dutch trust company Nova Trust held a seminar "Holding Solutions for Ukrainian Businesses: Reloaded, Revisited, Rethought". The seminar took place on 25 November in Kyiv.

The seminar participants discussed recent changes in taxation of foreign holding companies, as well as practical aspects of management of holding companies. The event drew the attention of medium and large Ukrainian businesses, which already use foreign holdings and/or plan to make changes to their existing structures, or just consider using them in the future. Representatives of over 50 companies and investment banks of Ukraine attended the event. The seminar was held in the form of interactive discussion.

Svitlana Musienko, Partner and Head of Tax of the Kyiv office of DLA Piper, talked during the event about the use of foreign holdings in the light of new Tax Code of Ukraine. Illya Sverdlov, Senior Associate, spoke on the nuances of using Cyprus as a holding jurisdiction. Roderik Bouwman, Partner and EMEA Head of Tax at DLA Piper, in his turn discussed in details the perspectives of Dutch holdings for Ukrainian companies. Friso Hooghiemstra, owner of Nova Trust, spoke about the opportunities and prospects for use of a Dutch trust company.

"Currently, more and more Ukrainian companies consider the use of foreign holdings for their further development. Having lots of relevant experience of providing tax and legal advice on this issue, we held a seminar in response to the demand on the part of our current and potential clients" - commented Svitlana Musienko.

"Currently companies need safe and efficient international holding solutions. They also examine their existing structures for their viability due to new Ukrainian realities, such as significant budget deficit, tight fiscal policy, more aggressive approach to international tax planning and restructuring throughout the world, new Tax Code in Ukraine, and increased demand on the part of Ukrainian companies for external financing, "- she added.
