USUBC was honored to participate in the “Power of Sisterhood: Ukrainian Women in History, Diplomacy, and the International Women’s Movement” event, hosted by Ambassador Oksana Markarova at Ukraine House last week.

The event brought together inspiring leaders of American-Ukrainian women-led organizations, diplomats, experts, and media representatives. Guests had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Alla Shvets about the Ukrainian women’s movement of the 20th century and the remarkable women who laid the foundation for today’s sovereign and democratic Ukraine.

The audience was also addressed by Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, who highlighted that over 50% of new businesses in Ukraine are now started by women, a powerful testament to the leadership and resilience of Ukrainian women.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ambassador Oksana Markarova, Ukraine House, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, Kateryna Smagliy and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America for organizing such an inspiring event and to Ambassador John Tefft, long-time senior advisor of USUBC for supporting Ukrainian-American female leaders.
