WASHINGTON, D.C. - The world famous Virsky Ukrainian National
Dance Company, Kyiv, Ukraine, is making a major tour in the United
States and Canada during the fall of 2004. This is their first visit to
North America in six years. They last performed here in 1998.

The 85 person Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company will arrive in
the U.S, on Monday, September 13 in San Francisco, CA and leave the
U.S. from New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday, December 5, being on
tour for 13 weeks.

One of the finest evenings you could possibly spend in the year 2004
would be to attend one of the over sixty Virsky concerts this fall. This
magnificent dance company displays the artistic beauty and spirit of
Ukraine.

Virsky has performed their powerful programs to audiences around the
world who have been thrilled and warmed by the passion, beauty, and
grace of Ukrainian folk dancing. The dance company was founded by
Pavlo Virsky in 1951 (most articles say 1951 but several say 1937)
and was named after Virsky in 1977, two years after his death. Myroslav
Vantukh became the artistic director in 1980 and is still serving in that
capacity.

One of the performances will be at the Lehman Center for the Performing
Arts in Bronx, New York on Sunday, November 7. The Lehman Center
website says, "The spectacular Virsky Ukrainian Dance Company of 85
have had audiences leaping from their seats with applause. Each and
every performance of this company is a romantic, elevated, passionate,
exciting show. Rarely do choreographic compositions take the viewers
on an emotional thrill ride where they are marveled by the groups precision
and grace and wowed by their power and command of their traditional
folk form."

Helen Smindak, in an article for The Ukrainian Weekly, July 26, 1998,
about the last Virsky North America tour, wrote, "They came, they
danced, they conquered--dazzling thousands upon thousands of
viewers in 38 North American cities with their exuberant artistry,
glorious costumes and breathtaking choreography........The reviews
were rhapsodic, praising the gravity-defying leaps and spins performed
by the men, the delicate and graceful movements of the women, the
visual splendor of elaborately embroidered and beribboned costumes
from the many regions of Ukraine."

The article by Helen Smindak continued by saying, "From the welcoming
dance 'Ukraine, My Ukraine,' featuring myriad regional costumes and
the traditional presentation of bread and salt, to the exhilarating 'Hopak'
finale, the program was sheer delight and spine-tingling excitement.
Cheering audiences expressed appreciation with bravos, applause,
whistling and standing ovations."

The Ukrainian Weekly outlined the dance company's past and how
Pavlo Virsky created a company that gained worldwide acclaim in
an article published on April 12, 1998. This article can be found at
http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1998/159821.shtml.

The Virsky Dance Company performed at the Ukraina Palace in
Kyiv, Ukraine, on May 31, 2000. I was fortunate to be in Kyiv at
the time. To see twenty-three photographs of this performance
go to the following link: http://www.artukraine.com/dance/index.htm.

On Tuesday, September 21, a Virsky concert will be held at the
Irvine Barclay Theater in Irvine, California. The Philharmonic
Society of Orange County's website has this to say: "The Virsky
Ukrainian National Dance Company combines brilliant ballet technique
with traditional Ukrainian folk dance. Conceived as a celebration of
the spirit of their people, the company gained worldwide acclaim for
its technically superb and innovative choreography."

The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware will feature
the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company on Wednesday,
November 24. The website of the Grand Opera House states,
"This magnificent artistic group has embraced the beauty of its native
Ukraine, the wisdom of its people as well as the folk tradition of humor
and optimism. Each and every performance is a romantic, elevated,
passionate and exciting show. The company creates wonderful dances,
is always full of surprises and delight, and is thus letting people of the
world learn more about the wonderful land of Ukraine."

The Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company does not come to
North America often. Take if from the thousands and thousands of
people who have had the opportunity to witness and enjoy one of
their performances somewhere in the world.....do not miss seeing
them in 2004!

"THE ACTION UKRAINE REPORT VIRSKY 2004 TOUR SCHEDULE"
"FIRST EDITION"
Latest Information as of Tuesday, July 13, 2004
All Information Subject to Updating, Correction and Change

The www.ArtUkraine.com Information Service (ARTUIS) searched a
large variety and number of sources, including the Virsky headquarters
office in Kyiv, Ukraine, to develop the following "First Edition" of the
Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company 2004 Tour Schedule for
publication by THE ACTION UKRAINE REPORT. The schedule is
for the personal benefit of the many friends of Ukraine in the U.S. and
Canada who are eager to attend one or more of the Virsky concerts.

We have received many requests this year for information about the
Virsky tour. Virsky used to have an outstanding website but it is no
longer available. An inquiry at their office in Kyiv into why their website
no longer works did not produce an answer.

The information in the schedule below is the best and most complete we
can provide as of this date. A large number of concerts are being held
on university campuses. We have not been able to verify completely
all of the information we have received and we understand some changes
are still being made in the schedule.

Not all of the U.S. and Canada host presenters of the Virsky Ukrainian
National Dance Company have yet posted their performance schedules
for their 2004-2005 concert season.

Please assist us in developing a more complete and accurate Virsky
tour schedule by sending us any information you have that will make this
schedule more accurate and complete. Please send such information,
as soon as you have it, to Morgan Williams, 202 437 4707,
morganw@patriot.net.

THE ACTION UKRAINE REPORT will publish a new, updated
Virsky 2004 Tour Schedule, the "Second Edition," on Monday, August 2,
2004; and then new editions will be published on Monday, August 16;
Wednesday, September 1; Wednesday, September 15, Friday, October
1, Friday, October 15 and the final one on Monday, November 1, 2004.
Your assistance in this project will be most appreciated by all.
