Accordingto the “Best Employer among Professional Candidates” survey - 2013 that EY conductsannually in Ukraine, the most important employer choice criterion is theavailability of opportunities for personal and professional growth. Ninety-four percent of respondents supported thisposition – a slightly higher percentage than cited salary levels as a criterionof an employer’s choice. Moreover, a potential employer’s market position, career growth and learning opportunities as well as an opportunity to obtain aninternational work experience are also of a great importance according to 80%of respondents. It is worth mentioning that in 2013 professionals demanded moreof employers and considered a greater number of employer attractiveness factorsthan they did in 2012.
“It’s a pleasure to observe that professionalsshift their focus towards development and approach the employer selectionprocess strategically,” says Olga Gorbanovska, a Partner and the Head of the HumanCapital practice at EY, which provides personnel-relatedservices in Ukrainefor more than 15 years. “Thatsort of approach will in the long-term increase the market value of humanresources and bolster competition on the Ukrainianlabor market among both professional candidates and employers.”
Around 3,000 professionalcandidates from various industries and withtwo or more years ofwork experience took part in the survey in2013. The study defined Ukraine’s bestemployers in 2013 on the basis of the general and industry-specific employerrankings. The study also analyzed in detail employer attractiveness factors; sources of information about employers; and other mechanisms thatcan affect an employer’s brand. These latter include labor migration trends, recruitment process deficiencies and issues that compel employees to leavetheir jobs.
Best employers
According to EY’s methodology, participantsindependently indicated up to three companies they would like to work for bytheir attractiveness, in a descending order (no choice options were provided tothe participants). After that, participants could select preferred industriesand choose the best employers from the suggested lists of companies organizedby industry.
Professionalsindependently indicated more than 700 companiesfor which they would like to work. Production,FMCG and IT companies were among the most frequently mentioned employers in2013.
Most of Ukraine’sTop 20 employers are large international and Ukrainian companies with well-knownbrands. According to the survey, the most attractive employerbrands for professionalcandidates are, in an alphabetical order, Coca-Cola,DTEK, Google, Kyivstar, Metinvest, Philip Morris, Procter & Gamble, Roshen,SCM and one ofthe Big 4audit companies.
Sources of information
The rapidexpansion of Internet technologies has significantly affected how jobcandidates perform an employment-related research. Internet resources were themost popular sources of information about employers among all viablealternatives. Professional candidates widely used job portals and corporatewebsites to look up information about employers. But traditional sources ofinformation still remain relevant. In fact, about half of all respondents obtaininformation about employment opportunities from their relatives, acquaintances, business partners and traditional mass media sources.
Other issues
The percentage of professionalcandidates who are ready to relocate abroad for employment purposes nearly doubled in 2013 as compared to 2012. But themajority of respondents do not intend to leave the country in theshort-term perspective.
Among the main recruitment process deficiencies that professionals indicated there wereunclear candidate selection processes and incorrect information in a job vacancy descriptions.
A moreattractive job prospects available elsewhere and an unsatisfactory compensationwere the mainreasons for which an average professional candidate left a job. It is remarkable that professional candidates are more likely to quit because of a negative team atmosphere than because of difficult relations withmanagement.
