SPECIAL CHICAGO INVITATION:  You are invited to join the Atlantic Council, in partnership with the U.S. Ukraine Business Council (USUBC), for a small, private breakfast and off-the-record briefing on Ukraine with Ambassador John Herbst on Monday, January 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the University Club of Chicago (76 East Monroe Street, Chicago, IL).
 
Ambassador Herbst is the director of the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, and is one of the leading experts on Ukraine. He served as the US ambassador to Ukraine from 2003 to 2006, when he worked to enhance US-Ukrainian relations, help ensure the conduct of a fair Ukrainian presidential election, and prevent violence during the Orange Revolution.
 
Prior to that, he was ambassador to Uzbekistan (2000-03), where he played a critical role in the establishment of an American base to help conduct Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He served for thirty-one years as a foreign service officer in the US Department of State, retiring at the rank of career-minister. He has received two Presidential Distinguished Service Awards, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the Secretary of State's Career Achievement Award, and the State Department's Distinguished Honor Award.
 
His writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, The National Interest, and Foreign Policy. He has also been a frequent guest discussing the Russia and the Ukraine crisis on television and radio and serves as a Senior Advisor to USUBC.
 
Ambassador Herbst will discuss the current state of Ukraine's economy together with ongoing political and security challenges that Ukraine is facing. He will also discuss the future of the US-Ukraine relationship under the new administration.  The moderator for the private breakfast will be Morgan Williams, President, U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC).
