Ukraine’s seaports are the main gateways for the country’s exports and imports. Seaports achieved a record high 160 million tons of cargo turnover in 2019. The five highest-volume mainland seaports are Pivdenny, Mykolaiv, Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Mariupol. Three of those – Pivdenny, Chornomorsk, and Odesa – are located in the Odesa region and were responsible for 65 percent of Ukraine’s seaport cargo volume in 2019.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent public health measures, seaport operators have seen an increase in business in 2020. From January to September, Ukraine’s ports handled 119 million tons of cargo, 3.7 percent more compared to the same period in 2019. Thus, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine has embarked on an effort to transfer management of Ukraine’s mainland ports to private companies through concessions and privatization.

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine is preparing tenders for concessions at the following ports:

  •         Chornomorsk ferry terminal serving railway, roll-on/ roll-off, and passenger ferries
  •         Chornomorsk container terminal
  •         Odesa cruise ship terminal
  •         Berdyansk cargo seaport
  •         Mariupol cargo seaport
  •         Reni cargo seaport (located on the Danube river)
  •        Izmail cargo and passenger seaport (located on the Danube river
