The people of Ukraine consistently sought to restore their sovereignty and independence lost during the Tatar-Mongol invasion to the Kyivan Rus in the 13th century. Numerous attempts failed to prevail in the 20th century, until 1991. Would pro-nationalistic sentiments that intensified after the start of Perestroyka in the Soviet Union in the 1980s and the visceral reaction to “the center’s” (Moscow’s) handling of the Chornobyl disaster inevitably result in establishing Ukraine as an independent state or were there other possible scenarios and why they didn’t come true?
Please join a conversation with eye-witnesses and immediate participants of the Ukrainian political process of late 1980s – early 1990s to hear about forces that were in play, those who fought for the sovereignty of Ukraine and factors that helped them make the dream of millions come true.
Organized by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation. Simultaneous interpretation between English and Ukrainian will be provided.
