Austria has a special place in the hearts of West Ukrainians. While modern Ukraine and Austria do not have a common border, West Ukraine was once part of the Vienna-based Habsburg Empire. This shared past has created synergies in the present that help to make the region a popular destination for Austrian investment. 

Many of the characteristics most commonly associated with today’s West Ukraine are rooted in the region’s Habsburg heritage.

The consulting company PwC will expand its presence in Ukraine by opening a Service Delivery Centre in Lviv in early 2018. The Centre will carry out a wide range of professional services tasks for PwC audit, tax and advisory projects across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Centre will hire at least 350 staff members.

“Opening the Service Delivery Centre in Lviv is a key element of our development strategy, not just in Ukraine but across CEE. The location was selected after thorough analysis. Lviv met all our expectations: access to highly educated local talent, convenient location, open business environment, significant opportunities for innovation, not to mention the growing role of Ukraine in the regional business community”, says Richard Pollard, Country Managing Partner of PwC Ukraine.

"I am standing inside the exhibitor room of (what claims to be) Eastern Europe’s largest startup event, IT Arena in Lviv, Ukraine. All around me are booths of companies looking for developers to join them, many servicing overseas clients. Upstairs are a handful of scrappy local entrepreneurs explaining their ideas, generally, they are well executed, but early stage.

IT Arena has great talks happening around us, attracting speakers from all over the globe with an impressive selection of technical, product and business topics. Despite this, a recurring thread running through the talks and conversations I had with attendees was that Ukraine wasn’t terribly good (yet) at the startup game. As a fan of highlighting newer startup and tech scenes (I will stick to ‘startup’ for the rest of this article), I wanted to know and understand why?", says Chris Ward.

Ukraine was named the "Offshoring Destination of the Year" at the 2017 Global Sourcing Association (GSA) awards ceremony which took place in London, October, 19th.
