On Tuesday, February 26, 2020, Commerce Department at the U.S. Embassy to Ukraine and Tensar International Corporation conducted the “Mechanical Stabilization – Innovative Solutions for Reliable, Long-Lasting, Sustainable Roads and Other Applications” presentation at the U.S. Embassy to Ukraine. Tensar is headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Foreign Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy to Ukraine organizes such presentations for U.S. companies in various industries to promote advanced U.S. technologies to potential customers and partners in Ukraine.

U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC) cooperated with the U.S. Embassy, Tensar and Uniprom LLC, a USUBC member and the local partner for Tensar, in making this presentation available to USUBC member companies and other potential clients from Ukraine’s public and private sectors.

At the event, the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Pennington brought welcome remarks.

Ilona Shtrom, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy to Ukraine, made introductory remarks with special focus on the safety, long useful life and the quality of various civil engineering structures developed with the Tensar technology.

Introduction to the Tensar International Corporation was made by Konstantin Vachnadze, General Director of Tensar Innovative Solutions.

The main presentation was made by Ms. Yuli (Chaido) Doulala-Rigby, Business Development & Chief Civil Engineer, Tensar International Limited, who has been working in geotechnical engineering for more than 20 years.

Ms. Doulala-Rigby focused on innovating technology of mechanical stabilization of the soil with geosynthetic products, gave numerous examples of projects implemented by Tensar worldwide in different applications:  airports, sea ports, roads, railways, civil infrastructure objects, and the defense sector, among which a number of projects had challenging geological and hydrological conditions. Backed by the extensive research and thoroughly tested, Tensar’s world-renowned geogrid products have set the industry standard, helped engineers, contractors and business owners use geogrid to achieve more cost-effective, reliable solutions for soil stabilization, earth reinforcement, and other site development challenges.

Peter Aizman, Director of Uniprom LLC, shared his company’s experience in implementing in Ukraine several projects based on Tensar technology at Lviv, Kharkiv, Zhuliany airports, at Kyiv-Chop, Kyiv-Kharkiv, Kyiv-Odesa highways, Odesa-Reni road, construction of сargo terminals at Odesa and Chernomorsk sea ports etc.

During the discussion, participants of the seminar admitted that in Ukraine the intensive trucking causes a significant road surface load increase and many Ukrainian highways and roads are being damaged due to poor construction technology and materials. Additionally, extending the useful lifetime of infrastructure structures would bode well for the owners’ budgets, but a longer term budgeting is required for adequate tender documentation and competition.

Michael Datsenko, Director and Member Programs, USUBC was the moderator of this event which was attended by over 60 interested parties including representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, state agencies, members of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, heads of different trade associations, airports, ports, scientists, design, maintenance and service companies.
