World Bank President Meets with the Minister of Health of Ukraine in Kyiv”


Kyiv, Ukraine
– Within the framework of a two-day official visit to Kyiv, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim together with Dr. Ulana Suprun visited medical facilities in Kyiv including the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital #15 and Center for Primary Healthcare #1 in the Podil district – to discuss Ukraine’s progress in transforming the health care system.  The key objectives of the World Bank Group President’s visit were to discuss Ukraine’s reforms and to reaffirm the World Bank’s support to help Ukraine accelerate growth and improve people’s lives.

"The World Bank has repeatedly supported Ukraine on its path to adoption of the medical reform and will continue to assist in improving the health care system" noted Dr. Ulana Suprun, the Minister of Health of Ukraine.

Mr. Kim will also met with President Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, members of the Government of Ukraine, along with civil society, private sector leaders, and representatives of the Parliament. They discussed how to reinforce Ukraine’s reforms in agriculture, health, pensions, energy, banking, and efforts to tackle corruption – which are aimed at helping improve people’s lives and boosting competitiveness and job creation in the private sector.

Together with the Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, Dr. Kim participated in a special event called “Ukraine Tomorrow-Innovation and Opportunity”, which was organized to bring together young people, entrepreneurs, and opinion leaders to showcase innovation and opportunities that modern Ukraine has to offer, as well as how best to prepare people for the jobs of the future.  The World Bank recently endorsed its Country Partnership Framework for Ukraine for 2017-2021, which supports the country’s efforts to achieve lasting economic recovery that benefits every Ukrainian citizen.

Currently the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in cooperation with the World Bank, is currently implementing the “Serving People, Improving Health Project” in Ukraine aimed to support medical reform implementation and to make the health care system more efficient in eight pilot oblasts. The objectives of the project аrе to enhance the fight against non-communicable diseases with a particular focus on prevention, to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care services in general, and to optimize the structure and organization of medical facilities and outpatient healthcare services at secondary level.
