Ukraine’s energy sector is one of the most important pillars of the nation’s physical and economic security. While the country’s gas transportation system has been discussed at length, Ukraine is now facing an even larger challenge: The Reforming of its Domestic Electricity Market.
Two leading experts are addressing this important issue in a report “Securing Capital Investment in Ukraine’s Electric Grid: The Road to the Future” just published by International Tax and Investment Center (ITIC), Dr. Ariel Cohen and Dr. Vladislav Inozemtsev, Washington-D.C., a prominent economist and Senior Associate at CSIS. The report’s conclusions will be discussed at a virtual round-table on Thursday, July 2 at 9:00 am Eastern (Washington, DC) and include a panel of regional and sectoral experts. The obsolescence and deterioration of the Ukrainian power grid poses a significant threat to the country’s embattled sovereignty, investment climate, and quality of life for its citizens. The key to reforming Ukraine’s electricity grid lies in the elimination of the existing heavily subsidized COST+ tariff model and creation of market principles that would encourage investment and ensure steady quality power supply for Ukrainians.
